Set of Four Federal Shieldback American Hepplewhite Chairs

A beautiful set of four late 18th century Hepplewhite shield back chairs. The mahogany frame exhibits moulded profiles and a spiderweb fan at the base of the back splat. The over upholstered seats are covered in antique charcoal horsehair with brass studding in a swag pattern. The rear seat rail of each is inscribed with he honorees from when the set was accessioned by Yale University Art Gallery, Massachusetts, circa 1795.

Lovely patina. Small restorations throughout. The chairs retain and antique horsehair covering of two complimentary patterns. One seat cover has a small tear.
