George III flame mahogany Secretary Bookcase
George III flame mahogany Secretary Bookcase
Magnificent flame mahogany and oak secretary. The cornice of the piece features fine dentils, gothic arches, and delicate blind fretwork. The upper two doors of paired veneer open to sets of original shelfs with adjustable supports. The matchbook veneer desk cover with extraordinary cuts of mahogany opens to reveal a leather work surface and fine pigeonholes and document drawers. Of particular note the central door with fluted Roman Doric pilasters framing the door bearing an inlaid arch and six-pointed star. The bottom case has four graduated drawers with veneer fronts cut of the same flitch as the desk cover, with period lion ring brass pulls. The case rests on carved hairy paw feet -- potentially of a later date. In total, a stately piece of work of the highest rank of its day. Britain possibly Irish, c. 1785.
