Early 19th Century American Mahogany Bowfront Sheraton Chest, School of McIntire

$8,250.00

A very fine period chest from the North Shore of Massachusetts, likely the workshop of Samuel McIntire in Salem. The top with roundel ovolu corners conforms to the swollen front of the chest and rests on the reeded turrets of the corners which terminate in turned baluster legs. Two short drawers rest over three graduated drawers with cockbeaded edges and extremely Fine mahogany veneer. Wonderful mellow patina on what is an old if not an original finish. This excellent piece is made rarer for the presence of a brass plaque on the reverse which reads "The Property of Samuel and Maria (Merrick) Allen, Married Nov. 2 1817." Almost certainly given as a wedding presents to the couple named, the piece may have been commissioned new for the occasion. The large brass pulls are gilded with 24-karat gold leaf, Massachusetts, circa 1815.

Provenance: Samuel and Maria Merrick Allen, 1817.
